Hi so it seems a recurring issue is that I am being directed to quests I can’t pickup as I have not done prequests (despite the guide indicating prequests required).
The latest being 38-39 leveling in Theramore where I was directed to pickup a quest ‘They call him smiling Jim’, I checked on wowhead and that site said to pickup from Captain Garran Vimes in the castle, where I couldnt pick up from him but he told me a story about the fire in the inn and directed me to the bottom of barrens, is there a better way to avoid things like this?

You should have been able to pick up that quest just fine, no pre-quest required
Wowhead states Guard Byron is the quest giver not Captain Garran
